The man who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The man who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been.

Happy Birthday Jessica

There’s a ship out on the ocean,
At the mercy of the sea.
It’s been tossed about,
Lost and broken,
Wandering aimlessly.
And God somehow you know,
That ship is me.

‘Cause there’s a lighthouse,
In a harbor,
Shining faithfully.
Pouring its light out,
Across the water.
For this sinking soul to see,
That someone out there still believes in me.

On a prayer,
In a song,
I hear your voice,
And it keeps me hanging on.
Oh, raining down, against the wind.
I’m reaching out,
‘Till we reach the circle’s end.
When you come back to me again.

There’s a moment,
That we all come to.
In our own time and in our own space.
Where all that we’ve done,
We can undo,
If our hearts’ in the right place.

On a prayer,
In a song,
I hear your voice,
And it keeps me hanging on.
Oh, raining down, against the wind.
I’m reaching out,
‘Till we reach the circle’s end.
And you come back to me again.

And again I see,
My yesterday’s in front of me,
Unfolding like a mystery.
You’re changing all that is and used to be.

On a prayer,
In a song,
I hear your voice,
And it keeps me hanging on.
Oh, raining down, against the wind.
I’m reaching out,
‘Till we reach the circle’s end.
When you come back to me again.

When you come back to me again.

Happy Birthday My Sweet Love.

"When You Come Back To Me Again"
song artist Garth Brooks

"Cheesy Jessica", age 1, Summer of 1998, Hawthorne, Nevada

When you were One,
I remember:
how soft your hair was
how big and gray your eyes were
your sweet toddler scent
that week you would only eat cheese and bananas
how you liked to dance, and twirl your skirt
and how much you cherished your brother.

Happy Birthday Sis. You are loved.

Too Hot

Too hot to do anything fun outside, so we went to PetSmart for a little toy shopping... came home with this thing:

Hot Hummer

I think the 110 degree temperatures have them feeling sluggish...

Two Years Ago...

Has it really been two years since I was in Alaska? I was looking for a particular photo of a dog riding on a motorcycle. I couldn't find the hog-riding dog, but I pulled a few other photos to share. I loved Alaska, I want to go back. Now. Now would be good.

Salmon fishing.

PJ rented this plane so he could fly me to Knik Glacier. It was a beautiful day.

A Blackhawk landing behind our Talkeetna office. I was THAT close to the helicopter. The pilots would walk to a nearby cafe for lunch, the fuel truck would come and fuel the Blackhawk.

This is "Juliet". This was taken in June when the Fireweed wildflowers were in full bloom.

Me, beaming because PJ let me fly Juliet.

Random Things

Cloudy yet Blue

It is 100 degrees outside. This is Cierra's "I don't want to come inside" face. Crazy dog.

New life.

A friend of mine brought over a cutting off another friends pothos (epipremnum) plant. The cutting was about three feet long. I cut a leafless part of it in to four pieces and stuck them in water. They seem to be happy.

Here Kitty, Kitty...

I think this would provide hours of entertainment for my dog...

Vegans VS Carnivores

The Legend of Arizona

The Legend of Arizona

The Devil wanted a place on earth
Sort of a summer home:
A place to spend his vacation
Whenever he wanted to roam.

So he picked out Arizona.
A place both wretched and rough.
Here the climate was to his liking
And the cowboys were hardened and tough.

He dried up the streams in the canyons
and ordered no rain to fall:
He dried up the lakes in the valleys,
Then baked and scorched it all.

Then over his barren desert
He transplanted shrubs from Hell.
The cactus, thistle and prickly pear:
The climate suited them well.

Now, the home was much to his liking.
But animal life, he had none:
So he created crawling creatures
That all mankind would shun.

First he made the rattlesnake.
With its forked poisonous tongue:
Taught it to strike and rattle
And how to swallow its young.

Then he made Scorpions and Lizards
And the ugly old Horned Toad.
He placed spiders of every description
Under rocks by the side of the road.

Then he ordered the sun to shine hotter.
Hotter and hotter still.
Until even the cactus wilted
And the old Horned Toad looked ill.

Then he gazed on his earthly kingdom.
As any creator would:
He chuckled a little up his sleeve
And admitted that it was good!

'Twas summer now and Satan lay
By a prickly pear to rest.
The sweat rolled off his wearthy brow.
So he took off his coat and vest.

'By Golly,' he finally panted,
'I did my job too well.
I'm going back where I came from:
Arizona is hotter than Hell!

Happy Fathers Day

For PJ from Cierra:

"A Fathers Day Poem From the Dog"

You feed me when I'm hungry,
You keep water in my dish,
You let me sleep on anything,
Or in any place I wish.

You sometimes let me lick your hands,
Or even lick your face,
Despite the fact I've licked myself,
In every private place.

You taught me how to come when called,
You taught me how to sit,
You always let me go outside,
So I can take a sh... Stroll.

You'll always have my loyalty,
Up to the bitter end,
'Cause after all, it's plain to see...
You are a dog's best friend!

Midnight Moon

I wish there was a little more clarity with the shape of the moon, but I'm still happy with the stars and the clouds. I took these pictures a little after midnight.

See the stars?

What I'm Reading...

I've done more reading in the past year than ever before. Sometimes I wander around the library wondering what book to borrow. I've read about the earliest Native American Indians. Then I started reading about the American West.

I'm currently reading the Big Sky series by A.B. Guthrie, Jr. The book is titled "Fair Land, Fair Land". Today I read a paragraph that echos exactly how I have felt while hiking.

"The days and nights were the same but the country changed, from forest to ferns to pieces of prairie and cottonwood patches. It was good to take note of them all but bad not to know what was seen. What's the name of this plant? What kind of tree's that? A damn shame that a man went through life ignorant of the life around him."

Lost In Translation

I had a fortune cookie with my dinner tonight. The message left me feeling perplexed.

Pest Control Gone Wrong

A few days ago, Cierra found a scorpion in the house, and mashed him flat.

I put it in a jar, thinking he was dead, or nearly dead.

He lived.

After the first day I thought maybe he'd like a drop of water.

After the third day I thought maybe he'd like some ants.

I'm nice like that.

I wanted to let him loose in our mean neighbors yard, but PJ wouldn't let me.

He's nice like that.

Iron 44 Tribute, YouTube Link

Almost one year ago, August 5, 2008, Carson Helicopters and Grayback Forestry suffered a devastating loss.

PJ worked closely with the men and women involved in this incident. He put together a heartfelt tribute dedicated to the Iron 44 Incident.

The movie he made was originally posted to his website, (http://thehelibase.com/2008/08/iron-44-tribute.html) but he asked that it also be posted to YouTube with our other helicopter videos. Because of the length of the movie, I have divided it in to two parts.

Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cXUvlw2_aU

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB_hjjexhmk

As the one year anniversary of the incident nears, please keep the friends and family of all involved in your hearts and in your prayers.

Scorpion Queen

Cierra has earned one more nickname: "Scorpion Queen".

She found a scorpion in the house and mashed that sucker flat.
