Today we flew from Fairbanks to Anchorage.
During our flight we flew to Denali and spent some time touring the South side of the mountains.
In 2007 we won the Road Lottery to drive the Denali Park Road in September. I was amazed and awed by the sights I saw that day driving through the North side of the park. Photos of that day drive are here: Denali 2007.
Flying over Denali was equally spectacular.
Packed up and ready to leave Fairbanks.
Scenery along the way.
Near here we flew over a group out with four-wheelers and trucks.
One of many Alaskan rivers.
Looking South towards the big bend of the Ruth glacier.
My favorite pilot, xo xo xo
The upper ice fall of the Eldridge glacier.
Looking East down the Eldridge glacier.
The crevasses in the snow covered ice can be as much as a mile deep. They are often filled with beautiful blue water.
Beautiful high granite walls near the Ruth glacier.
In the West fork of the Ruth Glacier looking East towards the Ruth amphitheater. The ridge line on the right is called French Ridge.
The Don Sheldon Mountain House in the Ruth Amphitheater. This is the only privately owned property within the Denali Mountain Range of Denali National Park.
747 Pass.
Looking at the Mooses Tooth.
The Ruth icefall.
Looking down at the crevasses of the Ruth icefall.
Looking down at the glacial moraine (glacial debris).
The Ruth icefall and its moraine.
Looking at the Ruth icefall, the entrance of the great gorge of the Ruth glacier. Touted as the deepest gorge of the world, deeper than the Grand Canyon. From the top of the granite walls down to the ice is about 6,000 feet. The ice itself is another 4,000 feet deep.
Looking back to where we flew through the Ruth glacier. In the background is Denali and the Mooses tooth.
Flying over Talkeetna, Alaska.
Near Talkeetna is a very tall house, towering over the trees it stands about four stories high.
I don't know any details about this house or "why?".
On approach in to Anchorage, I talked to the tower: "N31MH, Point No Name, Executive with whiskey" and tower answered "N31MH report downtown".
